LCD Soundsystem Captured By Panda Thugs!

Are you sitting down? Go ahead, grab a seat. Okay… there’s something I need to show you. Here, I’ll just post it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdRaf3-OEh4

Calm down! Resist the urge to don a panda suit and kidnap your favorite musician/celebrity. Seriously, I’m going to stop posting exciting things like this if you keep getting rowdy like that! (No, I won’t.)

I’ll be honest, I kind of freaked out when I saw this video for the first time. LA Times Blogs said it well:

The clip feels both wonderfully anarchic and vaguely unsettling, which might just be the mood that Jonze was going for.

Ahh, Spike Jonze is responsible. That sort of makes sense, in that he’s a well-respected director and this is a well-made-if-very-weird video.

My favorite part is probably how at the end all of the panda-suited captors seem so happy, and the band seems legitimately traumatized. Now that’s filmmaking!

Fixes And Focusing

Here’s the mix I’m listening to while I write this, give it a spin:

I’m pretty happy with how my Recommended Reading (aka re-blogged posts) section is shaping up. I’m using the RSS Digest plugin, if you’re curious.

Today while browsing, it occurred to me that none of the posts were appearing on my “Reading” page like I’d promised! Really, how I could let something like that slip by is both shocking, and appalling. In that order.

Actually, maybe it’s not.

I don’t know if this is common (although I expect it is) but sometimes I don’t feel motivated to be awesome. Don’t worry too much, I still am being awesome, because I can’t avoid that. Still, I’ve been doing some thinking over the past week about the nature of this apathy.

One conclusion I’ve reached is that I may let myself off the hook easily–say, attribute responsibility to others or my environment rather than take it myself–or with simple things like not doing affirmations, meditation and/or exercise daily. These three things should help a bit, so I’m getting back on the wagon.

You can feel free to push me in the right direction, too, although I’m not really sure what form that would take at the moment. I suppose it would be support and encouragement to be disciplined with myself and be more awesome.

Another thing that was actually brought up by my mom was that if I’m feeling apathetic, it might be a result of spiritual unhealthiness. For a long time, I just blanket-rejected any talk about religion/spirituality. Indeed, I’m still grappling with some aspects where things don’t line up with Science. It’s not like I’m about to become super-by-the-bible-Christian and believe dinosaurs never happened, or anything, but still… I’m a pretty logical dude, so “spirituality” has been a turn-off for me in the past.

So, as with anything that I don’t really understand but see benefit to, I’m going to do some exploring. Check out a few different things, and of course, read a lot more things. Also, I intend to call upon a certain friend of mine who’s currently doing a masters program in Pastoral Counseling for some–err–Pastoral… Counseling. 🙂

On the whole, I’m enjoying my life right now, I just suppose this is next area of learning that I’m going to work on.

What do you think about spirituality? Do you have any sort of spiritual practice in your life? If not, why?

New York’s The Greatest! (If You Get Someone To Pay The Rent)

The title of this post is taken from LCD Soundsystem’s song “North American Scum”. You should click below to listen while you continue reading…

I’m fortunate to have my job with The Art of Charm for many reasons, but one of my favorite is that it allows me to travel sometimes. Like now, for instance. We are back in NYC for the month of June, tearing it up, and wondering, “Why did we ever leave?”

And then, we remembered–after having spent our whole month’s budget in the first week of living here. “Oh yeah, it’s really expensive!” This isn’t all bad, though, because it will allow us to partake in something we’ve clearly been lacking since eating healthily in Los Angeles: Subway Five Dollar Footlongs! What Time Is It? Adventure Time!

This is only the most awesome show in the world right now. Really, how can any video that has candy-zombies and thinly-veiled sexual innuendo directed at baked goods not be good?

If you don’t already know about Adventure Time, think about this for a second: are we really that good of friends? How long have you known me?

Just kidding. I just think this show is so goddamn awesome that everyone should know about it. Also, thanks to the good people of internet fan-piracy, it’s online! Cartoon Network doesn’t let me embed the episodes on my blog, so you get this legal-grey-area version below. Mmmm, grey area.

Update: If you haven’t seen the pilot episode, you should start with that (it is equally-if-not-more awesome).

Say it with me now… What time is it? Adventure Time!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtyJi3lExo0

My favorite Adventure Time quotations:

  • Mathematical! Rhombus! That was totally math!
  • Ugh. The Ice King is an oxy-moron.
  • Finn: Why are you always stealing princesses?
Ice King: I’m going to make one marry me!
Finn: That’s … stupid! (kicks the Ice King in the face)
Ice King: Your hat is stupid!
    Finn: My hat… IS AWESOME!!
  • Look! Those ninjas are stealing that old man’s diamonds!

Hungry for more? You’re my kind of person! I used to have a link here to a shady-ish site with an episode of Adventure Time. It’s since been removed, so unfortunately, you’ll have to search the torrent of internet files yourself. If you REALLY want to find these episodes, shoot me a message from the contact form.

In related news, Finn is my new role model. Mathematical!

I Love My Friends & Family

So I’m back here on the east coast and last night I hung out with a bunch of good friends, the days before that I saw my family, and it’s been great!

I haven’t seen a lot of these people for 9 months (or more) and it’s totally fun. A few guys seem weirded out because of my studying with The Art of Charm, but hey–I can’t win ’em all. Plus, the weirdness was minor, and was far overshadowed by us having fun.

Anyway, I just wanted to express how happy and loved I feel right now, and a lot of it is because of my friends. Thanks, guys! 🙂

Trying A New GTD System

Note: This post is a blast from the past! It was originally published in 2008 and some of the products mentioned in the text have changed significantly since then.

I’m fed up with MonkeyGTD.

The software has been in alpha for what seems like an eternity, and must be at least a year. This is most likely because there seems to only be one developer on the project.

Dear Simon Baird:

Please get help! You have an awesome software, which is only hindered by its lack of speed. I know you’re working to improve its speed, and already have, but the releases are not stable and I can’t even figure out how to use them.
So please, Pretty please, solicit some well-intentioned open source coders?

Sincerely,
Alex

With that out of the way, let’s look at my past systems, and then the new choices. Continue reading “Trying A New GTD System”

The Perks of Being A 10 (And how to do it)

“I’m sorry, we cannot give you the tickets now. It is impossible.”

Even though she’s speaking english as her second language, hearing ‘impossible’ is not a promising sign.

“You were supposed to check in 2 hours before your flight.”
“Even though it was delayed by 4 hours? How could we know that?!”
“It’s okay, let’s just relax. We need to get on this plane before it leaves, so how else can you help us?”

My traveling companion is getting heated and almost just yelled at the RyanAir service desk employee. Doing that would get us nowhere, so I appeal to her for help in our situation.

If I said that the same thing could get you discounts, preferential treatment at bars and restaurants, help you make more friends, do better at business, and get free stuff, would you want it?

If it were free to learn and practice, and would make you a happier person, would you do it? Continue reading “The Perks of Being A 10 (And how to do it)”

Vannes Is Better Than Paris? Have The Most Fun In Brittany

I believe that taking trips makes you learn things about yourself, especially when traveling solo. For instance, on this trip, I fully realized how much I like being in huge cities—New York, Paris, Barcelona… the culture is fascinating and I get a kick out of how some things are the same wherever you are. For instance: the attitude of a big-city-dweller seems quite similar from NYC to Paris.

That said, I think that Vannes provided a more authentic experience.

(Vannes’ population is around 55,000)

Little towns have their own culture, history, and way of life. It’s a far cry from the hustle of visiting one of the aforementioned cities!

So then, here’s how to have the most fun while you’re there:

  • Go find the park
Being out in the sun makes me really happy. One of my first days in Vannes, I just walked around and ended up finding a duck pond and surrounding walking trail. I was able to sit there and see people passing by, and watch the birds flying around. It felt great—sitting there and writing in my journal, having basically no desires and no agenda. Ahhh, relaxation.
  • Check out the Galettes
I really can’t get over how delicious galettes can be. The Breton people really got the formula right: thin savory pancake + whatever toppings you want + bowl of cider = crazy delicious. Consider opting for the “menu” at lunchtime — a galette followed by a sweet crepe is heavenly. Continue reading “Vannes Is Better Than Paris? Have The Most Fun In Brittany”
