  • UX Design
  • JavaScript & jQuery interactive elements
  • WordPress PHP theme & plugin development
  • CSS3 animations (transitions)
  • Responsive theme development

My role during the build for the new Boingo.com site was multifaceted: advisor, UX designer, and developer. One of the largest projects completed to date, this site required everything from the design stages all the way through training writers on how to use their new software. I’m most proud of the interactive JavaScript  elements sprinkled throughout the site (which work on multiple platforms) as well as the successful information architecture we were able to implement.

As with most code, a simple screenshot doesn’t do this tool justice. I wrote the initial project brief way back in 2009 for what would ultimately become this project. Internally, we call it podcast-admin. The tool was developed to change advertising segments from a business’ podcast MP3s. In it’s current state, it allows a user to define “formats” for a podcast, and then to later change any segments marked as ads to arbitrary MP3 files. It’s been in use since 2009 but we re-wrote it from scratch in 2011 to be a WordPress plugin.

This tool is still in use (2014).

Project: Rebranding and Theme Development (late 2010)

Skills employed:

  • Branding
  • Graphic Design
  • Adobe Suite
    • Photoshop
  • WordPress theme customization
    • Custom PHP
    • CSS customization

This is probably my favorite project, because it afforded me more potential for creative expression. I actually led the brainstorming session that ultimately developed the brand for this site, “Go Legendary”. There are lots of subtle details to notice on this site, like the volcanic rock texture of the background, or the map image that sits under the featured image. The logo was designed by another designer, not myself.

Project: Micro-site Theme Development & eBook Publishing (2010)

Skills employed:

  • Project Management
  • WordPress theme customization
    • Thesis Theme
    • Custom PHP functions
    • CSS customization
  • Adobe Suite
    • InDesign
    • Photoshop

This project was a little different, since I undertook more of the project management as well as theme development. We hired outside designers to complete the look for the ebook based on a design brief I wrote.  After we got the graphics delivered, I was responsible for compiling and delivering the finished ebook as well as repurposing graphics from the book to create the website. For instance, the header image was originally the book’s spine.

The customization was less aesthetic and more sales-oriented on this project, but it is visible in the color scheme of the website (as directed by our marketing team) and the custom widgets in the sidebar to the right.

Project: Small-Business Homepage Redesign (early 2010)

Skills employed:

  • Adobe Suite
    • Illustrator
    • Photoshop
  • WordPress theme customization
    • Custom PHP functions
    • CSS customization

The screenshot to the right is actually a mockup of the site before it went live. The most visible customizations on this page are the “ornaments” (vector elements) added to the background graphics, and the three sections underneath the large header image. My responsibilities included finding relevant images on stock image sites and cropping them for the header image slideshow.

This design was used for about two years, until the team decided to move to something with a different focus.

Please note: the text on the right side of the image “approximate fold line” was not on the final site! This image was a marked-up screenshot of how the new site was going to look one it was deployed.
