Project: UCLA Graduate Division Redesign Implementation & Development (2015-2016)

Skills employed:

  • Data export/import to new WordPress-based site
  • Development of JavaScript-based search engine application
  • Developed internal Node.js utilities for data conversion
  • Built fully responsive theme and styles for website and applications

Another multifaceted project, my most recent work involved the integration of legacy systems with a modern infrastructure. The UCLA Graduate Division (GD) wanted to migrate from their hand-maintained codebase to a WordPress platform, and also update their Funding Search Engine to a mobile-friendly responsive design. In fact, all of the designs were made with small-screen visitors in mind, as that traffic has been steadily increasing. With so many irons in the fire, I’m proud that we were able to roll out functional products for the students to use in time for the start of the quarter.

My role during the build for the new site was multifaceted: advisor, UX designer, and developer. I’m most proud of the interactive JavaScript  elements sprinkled throughout the site (which work on multiple platforms) as well as the successful information architecture we were able to implement.

As with most code, a simple screenshot doesn’t do this tool justice. I wrote the initial project brief way back in 2009 for what would ultimately become this project. Internally, we call it podcast-admin. The tool was developed to change advertising segments from a business’ podcast MP3s. In it’s current state, it allows a user to define “formats” for a podcast, and then to later change any segments marked as ads to arbitrary MP3 files. It’s been in use since 2009 but we re-wrote it from scratch in 2011 to be a WordPress plugin.

This tool is still in use (2014).

Project: Rebranding and Theme Development (late 2010)

Skills employed:

  • Branding
  • Graphic Design
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Custom WordPress theme & functionality

This is probably my favorite project, because it afforded me more potential for creative expression. I actually led the brainstorming session that ultimately developed the brand for this site, “Go Legendary”. There are lots of subtle details to notice on this site, like the volcanic rock texture of the background, or the map image that sits under the featured image. The logo was designed by another designer, not myself.
